If you’re somebody who is looking to replace some missing teeth and are currently weighing up your options, you’ve come to the right place. In this month’s blog post, we are going to be comparing two options: dental implants and dentures.
When it comes to choosing the right solution for you, your dentist should consider several factors and compare with you. Expect to discuss things such as price, preference and even overall dental health. Each comes with their own pros and cons, it’s all about finding what would work best for you and your individual needs.
Dental implants are more expensive than dentures and other procedures. Most tooth implant prices range between £2,000 to £2,500 per tooth. This typically covers both the implant as well as connecting the component and the crown. A full set of dentures typically ranges from £450 to £1,500, depending on the number of fake teeth needed. It’s always a good idea to shop around if you are seeking private dental treatment as prices may vary.
Implants work by placing screw like implants capped with crowns on the tooth. First they extract the damaged root and a hole is drilled into the jawbone. The root is then replaced with a metal prosthetic one and implanted deep into the bone. The top is then fitted with a crown, but not until bone has started to grow around it to secure its place. It can sometimes take a couple of months until the mouth is ready to receive this.
Dentures, on the other hand, are removable, prosthetic teeth that can be fitted for your mouth no matter how much bone is present. Before creating the dentures, your dentist will study your bite, alignment of your upper and lower jaws, your gums and determine just how any teeth need replacing with dentures. They’re made to look like your natural teeth and gums and at times, if necessary, held in place with an adhesive that bonds them to your gums.
Caring for your dental implants is actually similar to how you take care of your natural teeth. You need to brush at least twice a day, continue to floss and having regular checkups. With dentures, it’s a little more complicated. If you want your dentures to last long term, it is recommended you take them out at night and soak them in a water or a cleaning solution overnight. You should also clean them on a daily basis by removing them after eating and brushing them. It’s also worth noting that dentures may need to refitted from time to time as our bite changes over time!
